In fine, a life of good or evil, the hope of Heaven or the despair of Hell, Faustus stands as a reminder that the choice between these two absolutes also falls to us.

About This Quote

This quote is taken from the play “Faust” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It is often considered to be the most famous of his dramas. Faustus has made a deal with the devil in order to gain knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all areas of life. When he finally realizes what he has done, he loses all hope.

He believes that ultimate knowledge and power can only come through complete destruction and despair, which it does. Faustus’s final words are one of despair, but another person looking at them might look upon them as a reminder that we must choose between good and evil. We cannot be neutral and simply stand idly by and do nothing when we see evil being committed.

Sometimes we must take action to prevent it from happening again, because without action there can be no change to the world.
